(indeed most) of the songs printed herein seem to have been sent to her, and come from childhood reminiscenses of Southern whites about Negroes. This is certainly not the best method for collecting Negro folklore, but with her love of the words of the people and her singleness of purpose in portraying the life of the Negro through his song, she has put together a convincing and valid book.
